We had a great time on Hogmanay (New Years Eve in Scotland), partying it up with all the family and the kids. It was a fairly early night for us…going home at 3am… I just can’t party very hard when I know my daughter is going to be awake at 8am!

So with the celebrations out of the way it’s time to get down to business and the first thing to do is set some goals for 2012.

My Goals For 2012

1. Help 10 people make more-than-full-time income from home using the internet.
2. Be more consistent with my yoga practice each day.
3. Double my income by finding more ways to help more people.
4. Do my first live offline event – this one is already underway with our UK Internet MLM Summit in April!
5. Make more connections with industry leaders.
6. Spend more time traveling and exploring with my husband and daughter.
7. Continue to work closely with those that are moving in their businesses to help them achieve more.

BUT, it’s not been all sunshine and roses. Building a business that fits around my family has been an adventure and a challenge to say the least. Into my second year of building my business from home, I am finally starting to feel that the balance has been struck and as such, I’d like to share with you a few insights into how you can build a long lasting business that will help you and your family for years and years to come, without sacrificing so much of the things you love (like time with your children) to do so.

Build Your Business With The Long Term In Mind

When I started my business I was told it was good to call leads, but I always struggled to find the time (and quiet) to do so. I felt like I was failing because I couldn’t fit in this ‘crucial’ task. What I soon learned though, was that there are other ways to build your business that I could do around my daughter and all of her noise. I found the method that worked for me (email marketing) and have built up my skills in that area instead of focusing on what I can’t do (call leads). After I learned that lesson I built up the rest of my business in similar ways – focusing on things that would grow each month, instead of working on doing more and more each month.

There’s No Race To The Finish Line

Building a strong business takes focus and determination, and…especially when children are involved in your life…BALANCE. When I started my business, I went nuts with it, which was great and I recommend you do too if you want the fastest start but as my business grew I focused on getting the balance between my goals in my business and my goals in my family right, before moving on the the next stage in my business. There have been times where I’ve forgotten this rule and very quickly cracks will appear in the foundations of new projects because I’m not working to my best when there’s imbalance between the two. Get the balance right in your life, build a strong foundation and your business will thrive because of it.

Trust Your Intuition/Gut

Everyone has intuition, it’s just a case of learning to feel it. For me, I became hyper-aware of my intuition during pregnancy… when my friend and midwife was trying to find my baby’s heartbeat for the first time (at about 9 weeks) I pointed to exactly where the baby was, even though the she was far too small to feel at that time. From then on I’ve learned to trust and develop my intuition and I tell you, it rarely steers me wrong. This little ‘gut feeling’ is SO important that I believe it should never be ignored. In fact, the first time I went against my intuition in my business, I ended up in a very sticky situation. Your intuition doesn’t just serve you when caring for your children, it serves you in ALL of life, including business. Take a moment to do a ‘gut check’ before working with new people, starting new projects etc. And remember to ask yourself, “Is this going to lead to me achieving what I want in the long-term too?” Don’t ignore your intuition.

Make Some Space

No matter how small your home, make a little area for you to focus on your work. If you’re at home with your kids while building your business, think about where the best place to work will be. If you have a spare room create a corner where you can keep your laptop/computer and notepads/plans (we’ll discuss this next). Choose a place that you can close the door on at the end of the day, but if you’re at home full time with your children, you might want to set up some toys/activities in there so they stay out of your hair/lap/nose while you (try to) work.

My Little Office

It really doesn’t have to be fancy. My office space (in my daughters room) has evolved over time to feel nice and cosy, but it started out as just a little corner and a cheap ikea changing table that I took one edge off to make a desk, LOL. In fact I still use that same table as it does the job nicely. Make use of what you’ve got but trust me you need a little space to yourself for “work time” even if the kids are still with you.

Get Organised

As much as I LOVE technology, nothing does it better than good old fashioned pen and paper for me. I like being able to clearly see things laid out in front of me so I have a calendar hung up on my wall, a filofax which I take everywhere and a TO DO pad next to my computer. I start the day by writing out the tasks that I am going to do that day and I note next to them how long each should take to avoid dilly-dallying. When you’re organised, the trap of mummy/daddy guilt is much harder to fall in to. However, if you spend the day farting around (for lack of a better word) you won’t feel so good about spending time away from your family to build your business. It takes time to develop a habit for these little organisational skills, but if you work on just one each day, only adding to it when you feel ready, you’ll soon find that you become more and more focused.

And don’t forget about getting your home life organised too. The last thing you want when you are “in the zone” in your business is to be worrying about what needs done in your home. My ABSOLUTE chaos-saving angel is this woman. She taught me a lot about achieving balance in my home as well as skills that carried over in to my business.

Take Time To Clear Your Head & Exercise

You are no use to anyone in your family or business if you are frazzled, overloaded and stressed. Find something you enjoy that you can do for at least 30 min a day even if you have to get up early to do it. For me, after lots of experimenting with walks, running, swimming and numerous other activities I found that yoga was something I could stick to each day, cleared my head and helped me start the day off right. I have to get up before my daughter to do it, but it’s well worth it. I use an online site called YogaToday to get full length streaming classes on my laptop.

If you haven’t already, check out Deepak Chopra’s book on Boundless Energy – I learned a lot of great things from this book and others by Deepak. A must for anyone trying to find balance between family and business.

Let Technology Do The Hard Work For You

Things like Aweber, TribePro, Numis and MLSP mean that my business is running for me even when I’m not there. I can take a day or two off and see no impact on my traffic, leads and income because I have things in place that build my business for me 24/7. Always look for ways to leverage the internet, other people’s efforts or systems to free up more time for you, while bringing in more income at home.
